Message from SKY-MAP creators

Ladies and Gentlemen,

When we just started SKY-MAP five years ago, we thought only about the fun it would create for our own kids and hoped to open a wide window to the Universe for them. During the first three weeks of January 2011, SKY-MAP received over 1.5 million visitors from 190 countries.

The constant increase in traffic has made our servers slow and unstable and our environment has become insufficient. With such servers, it is almost impossible to upgrade the system with the new sets of astronomical data and we don’t have enough power to process all the Internet requests.

We urgently need to replace our two 6-years old servers. According to our calculations, $14,000US would be sufficient for us to purchase two new dual 6-core CPU servers. This hardware would be able to serve you perfectly and would give us enough space and flexibility for at least the immediate future.

We are happy that SKY-MAP has become a popular resource that is used in schools and universities by students, teachers, amateur astronomers and professional scientists. We have collaborated with NASA, Harvard University, the European Space Agency, the Space Telescope Science Institute and many other organizations and we are proud of the level of recognition afforded to us by the scientific society and the general public.

Our popularity makes us optimistic; it shows that, despite the many different problems on the Earth, people are still interested in gazing up at the sky. We think that SKY-MAP is unique, not only because of its educational power, but also because it joins people together.

For several years, without seeking profit or glory, we (Konstantin Lysenko and Sergei Goshko) have carried out all the development, design, testing, data processing, software maintenance, and many other tasks, aiming to make SKY-MAP more professional, interesting, useful, and attractive. And we promise that we will continue with our efforts because we believe that this mission has a positive influence on us, our children, and many other people.

However, we do have problems. The expenses related to SKY-MAP are quite significant and noticeable for our families.

We need your support in order for SKY-MAP (WIKISKY) to remain stable, fast, and advertisement-free.

We need your support to continue and intensify the development, enriching SKY-MAP with new data and functions.

  7. Considering your visitors data exhibited at the bottom of this page, 743 all time simultaneous visitors on 3/7/2011, I question the wisdom of spending $14K to upgrade your servers. Is it possible to show a map like the one for cpu usage on pcs? How many simultaneous visitors will the new servers support? Just curious.

Those numbers are blog visitors only, that is less than 1 percent of total sky map visitors. Our servers handle up to 25000 requests per minute. About 5-10% of those requests require expensive in terms of CPU cycles real-time image projection generation. At rush hours CPU graph is solid at 100% on all servers. New servers will handle up to 100K requests per minute plus additional space will allow us to add more data and services.

Considering the *hours* of enjoyment & enrichment this site has given me, it seems only fair to give a little in return. I saw last week that the average movie ticket price is now $7.89 …the minimum donation here is five bucks, and you can stay as long as you want… I’d call that a bargain!

Hello, I have seen that this request for donations is open for over a year and still have not gathered enough to buy these new servers that you need. Have you not thinking in post this message in sites like Reddit and similar?. So perhaps you could bring to get donations faster, like a man named Omari, who requested help to get US$ 2000 to fix the fence that surrounds an orphanage in Kenya (more precisely of the Faraja in Ngong) and keep children safe. But in less than 24 hours Reddit met donations totaling US$ 65,000 for the orphanage (see http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/meet-omari-reddit-raised-50k-for-him-and-his-orphanage-in-under-14-hours/68090 for more details).
